Bermuda basics

A few highlights of things that make our island home so special.

white roofs

Epitomised by the iconic Bermuda white roofs, Bermuda's innovative water supply system stands as a testament to the island's adaptation to scarcity. Originally devised due to the absence of natural freshwater sources, the Bermuda roof, constructed with limestone tiles and equipped with a stone gutter, efficiently collects rainwater for storage in tanks beneath buildings. This unique architectural feature, celebrated through a traditional "Roof Wetting" ceremony where Gosling’s Bermuda Black Seal Rum is liberally splashed on the roof (and then of course consumed by the owners, designers, and contractors), reflects both the island's resilience against hurricanes and its commitment to water conservation. Even though modern developments such as desalinisation plants and underground wells now supplement the island’s water supply, the Bermuda roof remains integral, with regulations ensuring optimal water catchment. The painted roof, a perfect mix of art and continuous maintenance, exemplifies the Bermudian spirit and is a deep source of pride thanks to its distinctive visual impact, and crucial role in our water supply and conservation.

kitemaking

The Bermuda kite stands out as a distinctive cultural icon with a rich heritage passed down through generations. Crafted with pine sticks, tissue paper, and unique techniques learned through experience, these kites hold a special place in Bermudian tradition, particularly surrounding the Good Friday and Easter holidays. The process involves meticulous attention to detail in design, papering, and stringing. The headstick, bender, and hummers contribute to the kite's unmistakable characteristics, producing a loud and high-pitched hum while in the air. With roots in demonstrating Christ's ascension, the act of flying a kite becomes a rewarding experience, requiring effort, commitment, and humility. The tradition extends beyond aesthetics, encompassing a silent communication between kite enthusiasts as they carefully navigate the skies as well as the ever-present lighthearted verbal sparring amongst family and friends about how much of a tail is required for a successful flight.
